We pay a heavy, very heavy price for the superhuman dignity of our calling. The ridiculous is always so near to the sublime. And the world, usually so indulgent to foibles, hates ours instinctively.

About This Quote

The thing that is most sublime about a doctor is the idea that they are taking on a responsibility that does not belong to them. They should not be involved in the lives of the people they treat. But, instead, no matter what choices they make, those people will blame them for their mistakes. As doctors, we do not choose our patients and usually have no control over what comes out of our mouths or how our patients react.

We are forced to deal with these situations day after day. We have no choice but to soldier on and keep treating people as best we can. The results may not always be what we want but we deal with it anyway.

The world hates being forced to take responsibility for actions that should be left to others to handle, just as much as any doctor hates being blamed for things he/she has absolutely no control over.
